Edison announces new rent and mortgage assistance program

EDISON, NJ — Edison tenants and landlords who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic will receive rent and mortgage assistance through a new program, the township announced.

The Township of Edison has allocated $1,000,000 of its federal CARES Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds (CDBG-CV1 and CV3) to create an emergency rental assistance program and the mortgage.

The program will provide temporary assistance, up to six months for housing cost arrears, to low- and moderate-income households – those at or below 80% of the region’s median income. This program is for residents who have experienced a substantial reduction in income or become unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This program not only benefits our tenants and landlords, but just as importantly, it helps our community, including landlords and financial institutions,” Mayor Thomas Lankey said in a statement.

“It allows people to stay in their homes, landlords to pay their taxes and banks to keep our residents working. It will be a big boost for our whole township.”

Applications for the program will be available from Monday, June 28. To apply or for more information, contact PRAB at [email protected] or call 732-249-9700 Ext. 150.

Applications will also be available for download on the Edison Township municipal website, www.edisonnj.org.

The Housing Coalition Unit of PRAB, a non-profit social service agency, will receive and review all applications. The organization will also provide technical assistance to township residents to complete the grant application.

Residents must be able to document loss or reduction in income, demonstrate that the pandemic has impacted their annual income, and provide statements indicating that their rent or mortgage payments are overdue. This may include overdue notices, landlord (and/or agent) emails, landlord’s rent book or other applicable documents.

Rent and mortgage assistance checks will be paid directly to the landlord, lender or mortgage company.
