CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (WBTV) – County of Mecklenburg leaders are reminding those struggling to pay their mortgages of a program that might help them a bit.
It’s called the HOMES program and it offers grants of up to $340 – paid to the county tax collector’s office – that would reduce the amount one owes in property tax.
“This grant program is designed to help qualified low-to-moderate income homeowners in Mecklenburg County retain their homes by reducing the financial burden resulting from the robust real estate market,” information on the program website States.
There is no age requirement and the house does not have to be paid back.
The individual will need to have lived in the home for at least the past three years and not have more than one overdue property tax bill in the past three years.
There is an income requirement for the program. Those who are single should earn less than $47,150, while the income of a family of four should be less than $67,350.
Interested persons can complete a online application. The deadline to apply is November 18.
